After a looong and confusing travel process, I am safe and sound in la residencía!
But, I'll start at the beginning.
I got to the airport, went through security, and waited and waited at my gate. Twenty minutes before boarding, a huge storm came into Atlanta and delayed everything! I only had a one and a half hour layover in Mexico City so I was starting to get nervous about missing my next flight. One hour later, I decided to go to the desk and ask what I should do, since my plane was definitely not still going to be there when I arrived. Luckily for me, one of the people working at the desk switched me over to a direct flight to Buenos Aires, and a few hours later I boarded that one.
I knew it would be a long flight, but I definitely did not anticipate it being THAT long. After being in the car from Florida to Atlanta for 6 hours, in the airport for 6 more, and then a 10 hour flight, I was completely exhausted. Which is weird--considering I was just sitting the whole time. Anyway, so I just sort of wandered my way through customs, and found my ride to la residencía. My taxi driver, Felix, was super friendly and we talked the whole way there. I felt like I was stumbling over my Spanish, but he said I spoke really well, so that was very helpful.
So Felix took me to Azúl (that's where I live) and I met my landlady, Rosie. She showed me to my room, where I met my two roommates Ilaria and Kelsey. Ilaria is 28 and from Naples, she's getting her masters in law and has been here for a year and a half. Kelsey is 22, from Wisconsin, and finishing her major in Spanish. I like them both a lot, and even though Kelsey is also from the US, we have to speak in Spanish because it's the only way that we can communicate with Ilaria. Which is good! Lot's and lot's of practice. Our room is about 1/2 the size of a dorm at State, but it's so pretty that I don't even mind. We have a small balcony that overlooks Avenida Callao, the street we live on, and you can hear everything going on outside! So cool.
It's super rainy here today, and not many people are out and about. This was the bicentennial week, so there was a huge festival and I guess today people are just taking it easy. The residencía is in a great location, it's right by the Congreso Nacional in the center of the city. There is a grocery store (Disco) right across the street and a store similar to Walgreens nearby as well. I've been in grocery stores for the last 19 years, but when I went today, I basically just wandered around staring at everything. I probably had "American" written all over my face ha-ha.
What I have seen of the city is beautiful so far, the architecture is amazing! I don't really know what my plans are for the rest of the day, but probably resting up! Anyway, thats all I have for now.
